I'm so happy I finally went here. It's so cute: a small diner in the corner of a building, stripes of sunlight shining in through the blinds in the evening, a curving bar with a line of bar stools and just one guy cooking for everybody. He's a man of few words but he gets your order, fast and right. I doubt you could go wrong here, but I got the bibimbob. I was so full but I still want more, so I'm definitely coming back.

Diner setting, small menu and about 20 seats. The cook has an open kitchen - warm, quaint and I only saw a one man staff. I ordered the beef bulgogi bibimbap, but the egg was cooked rubbery because the flame was too high. The beef marinade was tasty, and the raw vegetables added a nice freshness to the dish, but there wasn't enough of the vegetables. This is a good place for quick and cheap korean food, but be careful since it's cash only! Happy Eating!

Cheap, fast, good korean food. The owner is not really talkative and will speak as few words to you as possible. Again, the food was excellent and I will definitely be back on those days when I don't want to cook for myself. I would give it 5 stars, but the environment is a little less than ideal. Also it's cash only. Otherwise, great food and great place!

Cheap, greasy diner feel-emphasis on the grease. The spicy pork was okay. The guy running the place seemed really annoyed that I came in and never acknowledged my existence other than to take my order (not sure if just having a bad day?). Food was inexpensive, hot, and came out quickly but it was forgettable. Since it is Korean, I would have liked to see more banchan options besides bean sprouts (they also have kimchee on the menu). Would probably end up there again if I needed something quick and was in the area but wouldn't make a point to go back.

in a restaurant era of menus with explanations and waiters going on long wordy diatribes to describe 'reductions' and 'emulsions', it's refreshing to eat at a place where the owner/chef/server is good at his job, unpretentious, and honest with his customers. The food is fantastic. I'm not sure if we've ever really had a conversation, but he's one of the few people in the st. louis food community that I truly respect. This place was formative when I was growing up, it was somewhere where I could just go get a bite of delicious food alone or with my friends and relax. I've been living out of town for a while now, but I find myself thinking about the food and my time here regularly and just went twice while I was in STL. It was as good as always. Much Love.

At first glance, you might not want to come, but you are missing out if you don't come in and give this place a chance. It's the next best thing to having a home cooked meal. It definitely a haven for home sick college students. From the looks of this place, you would never want to give this place a second try. If literally looks like a hole in the wall. But coming inside, it's not much better. There are only a few seats, and the wait time for a place to eat can sometimes be daunting. But it is definitely an experience you don't want to miss out on. You get to watch the chef cook your entire meal, which would definitely pique the interests of foodies and want to be chefs alike. I'm not quite sure how else to describe the dishes, but the one I ordered was a piece of grilled chicken on a bed of rice with bok choy for the side. The chicken was well seasoned, tender, and extremely delicious. Simply divine. The only downside to this place is the long wait and that they only take cash. :( But, if you forget, there is an ATM right next door at Cicero's.

Located in a small spot behind a restaurant on the Delmar loop, U city grill is the epitome of a high quality "hole in the wall" spot. Maybe about 10-12 seats up at the counter, you come in, order one of the 5 options on the menu, the one guy who is always there makes it, you eat, and leave. There's something almost comforting about the ease and routine of it all. At the request of a friend (Kevin D) I pretty much get the same thing every time- Bipimbop with extra meat. Imagine rice, shredded vegetables and sprouts, amazing tasting and seasoned Korean beef, korean sauce with a kick, and to top it off, a fried egg. Mix it all together and you have a delectable lunch.

Delicious food, made to order, served quickly. The food is super cheap but the portions are on the small side.

Tucked away on the corner of Delmar Street, this small Korean diner is everything one could ask for. I have been coming to this place regularly for 4 years now since I was college freshman, tried everything on the menu, and absolutely love the place. The food is generally well-priced and cheap. I know the U City Grill guy quite well (he gives great life advice!) and have a few tips on how to maximize your experience here. First of all is timing (life advice!). The place is managed by one guy so during lunch and dinner hours, it can get quite busy and the wait for food can get long. High traffic hours are usually between 12-1:30 PM and 6-8 PM, and I highly recommend coming before or after these hours. I feel like he gets quite overwhelmed during those hours so I usually come after and it's great to chat with him while you eat. Moving on to the menu. The standard dish is the bulgogi beef and it's absolutely delicious. With a side of chilled bean sprouts and his specialty marinated beef over rice, this dish hits the spot every time. I noticed that alot of people tend to order extra meat but I recommend ordering 2 eggs with your dish since it is not only cheaper, but you feel alot fuller after. There is also the bulgogi chicken and the combination plate, which is a mix of bulgogi chicken and beef, with a side of chilled bean sprouts. The bulgogi chicken is good but I rarely order these since I prefer his other dishes. And according to my Korean roommate, bulgogi sauce is generally marinated with beef, not chicken. The rice bowl is similar to the bulgogi beef dish but it has a mix of vegetables such as green peppers, carrots, and broccoli. I generally order this if I'm feeling having some veggies with my meal. Of course, I always add an egg! The bokumbap is his korean fried rish dish. It is made with bulgogi beef, carrots, onions, green onions, eggs, and one of my go-to dishes. Adding extra meat skews the balance between rice and meat but it's great adding an additional egg on top! I love eggs. During the winter season, he offers spicy pork bokumbap and it's delicious, even better than his standard bokumbap. Definitely try this since it helps with the cold weather and it's seasonal! The kimbap is the Korean version of a sushi roll. Don't order this. I lied about trying everything on the menu, and I actually have never seen it or order this myself and this is for several reasons. First of all, even if you ask, 99% of the time, he will tell you that he doesn't have it. It take alot of time to make and since he has so many customers, he generally prefers that people not order it. Second of all, most people I've seen who attempt to order it generally want like a veggie dish or something light to eat. THUS, I recommend the bibimbap! The bimbimbap is the veggie dish with bulgogi beef, sliced lettuce, carrots, green onions and egg, topped with gochujang korean spicy sauce over a bed of rice. I generally mix everything together and it tastes alot better together. The dish is light and great for those who want to get their veggie fix. The Korean Hot Soup is his beef stock soup with clear noodles and veggies. The soup is mildly spicy and great during the cold seasons. He also has a seasonal Chicken Hot Soup option which I generally order during the winter. The chicken is tender and juicy and very different from white meat. He emphasizes many times that the chicken he uses is "wild, cage-free, free-running chickens." Hence, the tenderness. As always, make sure you have cash handy on you when you come! There is a ATM machine in Cicero's next door but with a service fee, so remember, bring your cash!

Hole in the wall but a cozy place, cash only business. Looks like a one man band. He takes your order and turns back to cook, serves the dish and then rinses plates. Probably that was the reason he did not acknowledge me, too busy to bless me a smile. He looked really depressed (and autistic)... It has maybe 8 items on its menu, which is a display board over the fridge. Tasty bulgoki and fabulous bibimbap. I didn't get free banchan (small plates of appetizers) though. Overall it is alright. Just don't expect the friendliest of service.

One of my go-to places for a quick meal during my undergrad years. This is a hole in the wall, with only two tiny tables for two and the remaining seats at the counter. The chef never smiles or talks except to take your order but there is something warm about seeing him every time you walk in and knowing that he remembers you and will cook you a fulfilling meal. There aren't that many items on the menu but enough that you don't get bored. I've tried most of them and they are all sooo good! It's also really affordable, although my guy friends always have to order extra meat or two dishes to be full/comfortably bloated. This is cash only. Not good for large groups but you can always do take out. Strongly recommend U-City Grill.

This is going to sound crazy, but I go here at least once a week. At least! Bimbim bap = $5.95 Bokumbop = $5.95 A generous side of kimchi = $1.00 And there you have it folks, you can walk out paying less than $10 for a meal. There is very limited seating, but the turnover is fast considering there is only one man that cooks, washes dishes, and checks you out. Don't expect to be greeted and bring CASH! Oh, and you can also purchase 3lbs of premarinated bulgoki beef and cook it at home, just call in a couple days advance :)

Our "go to" place. Small, hole in the wallish... but you can tell he cares about what he does. The food is amazing!!!

Great value, not much seating but the counter, and pretty good food. Big portions and more vegetables than I expected. I know I will be taking advantage of this delicious and inexpensive option many cities and Asian food lovers can only dream about! Seriously, fast food would be out of business if more excellent places like this existed.

Can't believe I haven't updated my review from way back in 2009. I've been to U City Grill dozens of times since then. I would say it's now in my top 3 favorite restaurants and one of the most consistently delicious and satisfying meals in St. Louis. I always get the bi bim bap, and it's always amazing. Can't go wrong. Cash only, closed Sunday. Don't skip the hot sauce.

Dope, is the only word I can use to describe this place. The name of this place is super deceiving because it serves nothing related to normal American "grill" stuff. It is simple straight forward Korean food made by a simple austere Korean man...who has yet to smile at me. This restaurant is simplicity at its best. There are less than 10 items on the menu, and everything is made to order. I default to the Spicy pork belly because it is sooo fatty and delicious, but most everyone just order Bulgoki Beef/Chick, the bibimbop, or just....everything. There is no decor, no ambiance and that is what I feel like makes this place an authentic Asian dining experience (and I say Asian because I feel like many chinese restaurants do this too). They let the food do the talking and won't try to woo (is that how you spell it?) you with pretty decorations or whatever. This place just has bar seating and everything is cooked in front of you. He takes the meat out of tupperware and the whole experience is a bit unusual. But that is why I like it. Its fast cheap and overall just straight forward. I come here way to often and am always very happy when I leave. Go UCity Go! Kamsamnida Ucity!

Very surly chef who makes great food. He hates you and he hates life, but he does know how to make a fabulous bibimbob. Go for the extra meat and the extra veggies. Don't bother trying to speak to the chef - he wants you to go away.

This is a hold in a wall Korean joint that everyone needs to come try. Once inside, please don't be expecting any great services or pleasant hosts. There is only one person manning this post, and that is the cook/owner himself. He wont greet you or welcomes you, he will just ask what you want and continues to cook. While quite and reserved, he dishes out a mean dish of bimbim bap. This joint offers a selected dishes of Korean's best, and most importantly, it offers it at a reasonable price. I should not forget to mention that it is a CASH ONLY place. Overall, this place is great. I cannot ask for more: great food at areasonable price!

Amazing! Get the bibimbob and kimchee. Better than Seoul Taco honestly. Only negative is it is cash only. Quick, clean, tasty, filling, and cheap!

  • David W.

Cheap Homestyle Korean food. How else can you go wrong? The portions are mediocre, but the prices are quite cheap. If you are really hungry you could technically order 2. The place is very small just one very small corner. The food is quite good, not oily, healthy, and balanced, meats are seasoned extremely well. I definitely would go to this place a lot more if I lived closer; definitely worth it and checking out for a smaller meal. Service is below average but food makes up for it

Bibimbop...delicious with a D! Bulgoki Beef.....D! such a non descript place with delicious layers of flavor. note tho, its not on Enright Street anymore but behind Ciceros. YELP and GOOGLE says Enright but not. would highly recommend but dont come for the atmosphere, come for the chef.... who barely talks smiles etc. But he cooks a mean dish

This place is AMAZING. The food is so tasty, fresh and cheap. The interior is definitely old but it has a ton of character. The owner can be a little standoffish but once you engage him in conversation and get to know him he's a really nice guy. We occasionally bring him fresh tomatoes and garlic and in exchange he makes us Korean pickled peppers. We LOVE this place. It's our go to for healthy, quick, cheap food.

I've been going to this place since the late 90's and it's one of the best kept secrets in STL as far as I'm concerned. The family owns and operates this restaurant, they are always fast and friendly and the food is really delicious. Bulgoki Beef has always been my favorite but honestly I've never had anything there i didn't like. Check it out for yourself!

Cash only and a very limited menu... I tried it a few times. I really wanted to like this place. At first I thought maybe there is another u-city grill and I went to the wrong one (based on the reviews). The food and service was average at best...

I've been here about 6 times the past 2 years because it's my go-to when I have out-of-town visitors and we want a quick, cheap, good-portioned hole-in-the-wall Korean bibimbap! If you've never had bibimbap before, this is the place to go. The restaurant hours are a bit variable but check out the hours listed on this page so that you don't show up only to realize that it's closed! Bibimbap is basically a rice bowl packed with sauteed vegetables and gochujang, chili pepper paste, as well as marinated beef. I love Korean marinated beef. You can add extra beef for a dollar or two here. The rice bowl is topped with a fried egg, and if you aren't the type who likes mildly raw egg that gets cooked by mixing it around in the hot rice (but it's SO GOOD like that!), you can ask the chef to make it well-done. After the bowl is served, my favorite way to eat is to mix everything together so that the beef, veggies, rice, and egg are one hot mess of deliciousness. The restaurant is run by one Korean man who does all the cooking, but I've rarely had to wait longer than 10 minutes for my food. Since there's only about 10 counter seats and 1 table, I know some people just get their food to go and eat elsewhere. If you like really spicy, their bibimbap's chili pepper paste isn't going to do it for you. I like milder chili paste so it works well for me!

  • Brian R.

It's a hole in the wall, but the food is amazing. The entire restaurant is basically a bar, and there's not a lot of seats. The chef takes your orders directly, and generally seems kind of grumpy. Despite all that, I come here regulayly with my friends, since the food is inceredible. I get the bulgoki beef with extra meat; they get bibimbob, and we all get a ton of amazing Korean barbecue.

Great Korean food for a reasonable price! All food is served diner style made on a flat-top grill. There aren't a huge selection of foods and the place is definitely a little on the more cramped side, but it will be difficult to find as good of Korean food at this price. All food is served and made by one person who I admit can be more on the reserved side. But, be patient, and I am sure you will be satisfied with your meal. My favorite dishes are the bibimbap and the bokumbap rice dishes. Both are essentially fried rice dishes with a fried egg. Bokumbap is more savory while the bibimbap has a lighter, cleaner taste with a touch of Korean hot sauce. If you're feeling more adventurous, try their hot soup. It's really great to eat especially in the cold of the winter. Just a really casual place to eat with great prices and great food to match. You won't be disappointed.

Let me tell you the legend of UCity grill, but first... This is one of my favorite casual dinner haunts in St. Louis. The dishes here are simple, fresh, and fast (when it's not busy). The bibimbop, spicy pork belly, and korean hot soup (great for a hangover) are the house specialties. Now, some people are put off by the proximity to the chef and his less than friendly service. So before any more of you complain about this, listen to the story I'm about to tell. UCity was opened in the 80s by the now owner's parents, immigrants from South Korea. Their son never had much interest in cooking and spent his youth training in the art of Taekwondo. He competed in several international tournaments. Then, just as he was making a legitimate name for himself, his parents fell ill from age and he had to take over the restaurant from them. He spends every day of his life on his feet, serving impolite customers while he dreams, instead, of running his own dojo. Now you know, so please cut the chef some slack by showing a little empathy.

The staff isn't super friendly, the menu isn't exactly lengthy, and the space isn't going to blow your mind when you enter. This is an old school diner, serving maybe 7 Korean dishes, and at least 3 of them are some variation/combination of other menu items. The food's good, reasonably healthy (grated cucumber, carrot, and a good dose of beans sprouts are added to your box before the meat), and you'll get full for $5. The same thing I say about Miami Grill holds true for U-City Grill....good for hungry folks on a budget....Get the bibimbop!!

  • Ryan S.

Delicious, authentic, inexpensive Korean food disguised as a burger joint. The place is cash-only. The one and only cook/server doesn't give a fuck. You tell him he serves the best Korean food? He doesn't give a fuck. He already knows. Don't waste your breath. Just eat here. He's basically the Korean version of the soup-nazi from Seinfeld. I love this place.

  • Jason C.

Tried it once. Had the Bibimbap and Bulgogi Beef. The price was right, but both dishes were lacking in flavor. I've had much better Korean food (just not in St. Louis). Service is good but slow as there is usually only one person working as the chef and waiter.

    (2)
  • Li L.

Yes the meat is good, but everything else about the bi bim bap is super average. The red sauce is more diluted and a lot less spicy than normal. I asked for extra red sauce, and it turned my bowl into more of a soup. However, I guess St. Louis does not have "normal" Korean standards due to the lacking Korean population, so this is rated average 4 stars because people don't know what good Korean food tastes like. I'm from Houston and lived in NYC for a year so I have more than enough experience to judge. Also, being forced to sit next to loud, snotty Wash U kids almost ruins my appetite.

  • Aaron Jae M.

Such an awesome place. Simple and well done korean food. Vegetables and meat over rice with an egg. Who knew such delicious food was so easy to achieve? Only downside is that they close early.

  • Bonnie T.

Everyone who went to Wash U have been to this place! This is the most amazing down to earth place you can get home style Korean dishes and breakfast items not too far from the campus. I always come here every time I'm back in the city and the Korean couple that operates this place were like our family! Oh I miss U-City Grill....and the delicious food they make!!!!!

  • Rogan B.

More people need to know about U City Grill. Instead of going to Seoul Taco, go to U City Grill and get a better product. The bibimbap is simple, yet delicious. Same with the bulgogi. As other posters have mentioned before, the gentleman that serves you won't be winning any prizes for friendliest person around, but it doesn't take anything away from the quality of the food. As I said above, next time skip Seoul Taco and come here instead.

Best authentic Korean food in saint louis. Here you get the full experience. After spending a few years in Korea I missed some of the smaller diners that were plentiful in Korea. Not only is this place on par with what you'll find in Korea, the food is excellent! Prices are great too, only $5.45 for bulgoki beef. Two people ate for less than $20.

  • Iffat B.

I went back recently and it was not as good as the first time. I'm not sure what happened! I also did not appreciate the fact that the guy who makes the dishes does not talk and is not that friendly. Also, since there is a new Korean fast food place nearby, I just go there now.

We were visiting St Louis for a weekend with friends, and let Yelp guide us here for lunch. A Korean diner? Sounded interesting! It was noon on a Saturday, and except for one other couple the place was empty. What followed was one of the most bizarre eating experiences of my life. And not in a good way. First impressions: the place looked grungy. There were stains on the ceiling, and some cleaning supplies sitting out on a table next to us in the eating area. Our party perused the posted menu for a minute and then placed our orders. About 20 minutes later, one of our meals arrived. Then the cook started preparing the second meal. That was when we realized that there was only one guy working there, running the entire restaurant--and he was going to prepare each of our lunches separately. About 20 minutes later, a second lunch arrived. 25 minutes later, a third lunch arrived. And finally, after another 20 minutes, my lunch was served. He had totally gotten my order wrong, but by that point I was so ravenous I told him never mind. Also important to note: there is NO BATHROOM. That's right. We were told there wasn't one. When we asked if there was maybe a nearby convenience store or shop down the street with a restroom? the owner just shrugged and said Nope. Our friends' 2 year old daughter had to poop in a portable toilet on the sidewalk in 105 degree heat. Was the food tasty? Yes. Was everything else about the experience about as bad as any restaurant I've ever tried? Also, yes.

Hole in the wall places are the reason I Yelp. Nested in a back corner behind Cicero's, U city grill is definitely a bit of a find. My friends and I come here when we don't feel like driving 30 minutes to get all you can eat korean food. We also come here if we're not quite hungry enough for all you can eat korean food. :) Anyway, the food here is made for you as you sit at a bar (or some small tables next to the window if the bar is full). You see the guy pull out marinated meat, chop fresh veggies, and crack the egg for you. There is pretty much one guy running the whole thing and I think they cash only. A bit annoying, but worth it for the price and the food. The food is great. One bowl is usually just the right amount for me. There are veggies, meat, an egg, and rice! I often get kimchi on the side. What more can an omnivore want? I really recommend coming here if you're around and hungry. It's not really the sort of place for a date... unless you're running late and want a quick bite before catching a movie at the Tivoli.
